GYOKKO RYŪ KOSHIJUTSU SEMINARWith Sean Askew
October 10-11, 2026 | Novi, Michigan
Join Sean Askew for a rare opportunity to train in Gyokko Ryū Koshijutsu during two days of focused study, exploration, and hands-on training. The central theme of the seminar will be Gyokko Ryū Kihon: Structure, Distance, and the Space Between. Kihon is often translated as “basics,” but it is much more than beginner-level movement. Kamae, distance, footwork, angling, receiving, striking, timing, and balance-taking are foundations that we continually return to throughout our training. These fundamentals give the body structure while also creating the space needed for movement to become natural and adaptable. Sean will also explore Koku 虚空, which can be understood as emptiness, openness, or space. Not as “nothing,” but as the room in which movement, timing, and possibility appear.
Throughout the seminar, Sean will use fundamental movement, partner drills, balance-taking, timing exercises, and Gyokko Ryū kata to examine how kamae creates potential rather than stiffness, how distance and angling create options, how to receive without clashing directly with force, how to find the empty space within an opponent’s structure, and how timing and awareness allow technique to arise naturally. The seminar will also include training in Happō Biken Rokushakubōjutsu (6’ staff) and Jōjutsu (4’ staff) techniques. If you are serious about deepening your understanding of Gyokko Ryū movement, structure, timing, distance, and transmission, this is a training opportunity you will not want to miss.
