Blog: Dayton Bujinkan Dojo 2016 Grand Opening and Facility Relocation
The Dayton Bujinkan Dojo hosted a "Grand Opening" Seminar and Celebration during the weekend of May 21, 2016. This event marked the fifth relocation of the dojo since 1997, and the first since 2005, to a facility providing increased square footage. The new 9300 sq ft location at 3180 Kettering Blvd, Moraine, OH 45439, featured new training mats, expanded floor space, renovated changing areas, a kitchenette, and air conditioning.
The primary grand opening event on Saturday, May 21, 2016, consisted of an all-day training seminar and included sword-cutting (tameshigiri) demonstrations during the lunch interval. Supplemental training sessions took place on Friday, May 20, and Sunday, May 22.
The dojo hosted Bujinkan Shihan Steve Olsen from Japan as the guest instructor for the weekend. Olsen, who began training in Japan in 2001, maintained a weekly training schedule with Soke, Nagato Sensei, and Someya Sensei. He was also the photographer and publisher of the award-winning art book "Masaaki Hatsumi: Dojo Art," which features Hatsumi Soke's calligraphy and paintings.
Steve had previously taught annual seminars at the Dayton Bujinkan Dojo starting in 2010. His curriculum for the 2016 grand opening seminar was structured around material from Soke and the senior Shihan classes he attended in Japan earlier that year.
In addition to Steve Olsen, Shihan Craig Olson participated at the event, and Bob Ensign performed a sword demonstration.
