2019 Severe Storms and Tornadoes in the Community
A few friends from out of town have asked how the Dayton Bujinkan and broader community are doing after severe storms and tornadoes hit the area last night (May 27, 2019). To date, we don’t know of any students or friends injured or killed. In the community at least one person died and 40+ people were injured. Search and Rescue were still searching buildings as of this morning. The Dojo building was spared any damage; most of the destruction occurred on the West side of Dayton or East of the City (in Beavercreek). We know of one friend’s home destroyed and plenty of folks without power. Unofficially there were three tornadoes with 12+ in the State of Ohio. Significant impacts to infrastructure - water, energy, gas damage will take time to fix - with boil advisories in the area. At least two Cities and one County have declared a state of Emergency. Some emergency facilities were damaged – two fire houses are in disrepair. The fact that more people weren’t hurt is a blessing.
So, what next? How can people help? If you are religious, pray. If you have money, donate to the local Red Cross or Community Shelters (they are providing a roof for many people). If you aren’t religious and/or don’t have money, consider donating clothes or items to charity - people will need it. Otherwise, think about what you would do if you were impacted by a storm RIGHT NOW. What’s your bug-out plan, where do you go, do your neighbors need help, how much Blue Moon is needed, etc.
